 The Sperm Whale is a marine mammal species, order Cetacean, a toothed whale having the largest brain of any animal.

 A Lamprey is a parasitic marine/aquatic animal with a toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth. Translated directly, their name means stone lickers.

  The Fangtooth are deep-sea, ferocious-looking beryciform fish of the family Anoplogastridae. Found in the tropical waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.

  Hagfish have elongated, eel-like bodies (so flexible they sometimes tie themselves in knots). They have four hearts, two brains, and a paddle-like tail.

  The Vampire Squid, or Vampyroteuthis infernalis (which literally translates as “vampire squid from hell”), is another inhabitant of the deep sea, usually found in temperate and tropical oceans and was actually incorrectly identified as an octopus when it was first spotted.

 Living up to its name, the Lumpfish has scaleless skin with a bumpy ridge down its back (which is actually a modification of the first dorsal fin) and rows of knobby protuberances, called tubercles, down each side.

 The Axolotl is the best known of the Mexican neotenic mole salamanders. Larvae of this species fail to undergo metamorphosis, so the adults remain aquatic and gilled. Axolotls are used extensively in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate most body parts.

 Chimeras are cartilaginous fish in the order Chimeriformes, known informally as ghost sharks. They may be the oldest and most enigmatic groups of fishes alive today.

  Coffinfish are bottom-dwelling fishes found on the continental slopes of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, at depths of up to 2,000 meters (6,600 ft).

  Barreleyes are also known as the spook fish, they are small, unusual-looking deep-sea osmeriform fish comprising the family Opisthoproctidae. Found in tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

  Anglers are bony fish named for their characteristic mode of predation, wherein a fleshy growth from the fish's head acts as a lure; this is considered analogous to angling.

  Due to the Gulper Eel's specialized body shape, it is a poor swimmer and relies on the luminescent organ at the tip of its tail to attract prey.

  A Viperfish is a deep water fish in the genus Chauliodus, with long, needle-like teeth and hinged lower jaws. They grow to lengths of 30 to 60 cm (12 - 24 inches).

  Giant Squids can grow to an incredible size; estimates put the maximum size at 13 meters for females and 10 meters for males.

  Related to both shrimp and crabs, Giant Isopods are found deep in the cold Atlantic waters.

 This Portuguese Dogfish is one of four such specimens found off Greenland since 2007. Listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the deep-sea species native had previously been unknown in Greenland waters, the new report says.

 The Dreamer, which grows to a not-so-monstrous 6.7 inches (17 centimeters) in length, is 1 of 38 fish species found around the Arctic island for the first time, according to a recent study led by biologist Peter Møller of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.

 The Iceland Catshark species, is among several sharks recently found in Greenland waters for the first time. The small shark has been found in other oceans at depths of between 2,645 to 4,625 feet (800 and 1,410 meters), where it feeds on fish, marine worms, and crustaceans such as lobster and crabs.

 This Atlantic Football fish, a type of angler fish that lures prey by waggling its fleshy "bait." The stubby, deep-sea species belongs to an angler fish group in which the males attach themselves to the much larger females like parasites. The tiny male—little more than a sperm donor—is nourished by the female until her eggs are fertilized.

 The Mediterranean Grenadier, or rattail was first spotted around Greenland in 1998. Most of the new-to-Greenland deep water species reported in the survey, such as this grenadier, are of little commercial value.

 This double-baited Angler fish species new to Greenland include the peculiarly appendage Linophryne Bicornis, such as this specimen hauled up from a depth of 4,685 feet (1,428 meters) in 2009.

 It may be unappetizing to look at, but this newly arrived species of angler fish, Lophius Piscatorius—that's "Monkfish" to seafood fans—could prove a tasty addition to Greenland's fishery, according to study leader Peter Møller.
